What’s in a name?

I’ve been asked to add my voice to an online petition several times in the last few days. It seems that a number of my alumni are horrified and shocked that there is talk of changing the name of Rhodes University. Did you know that neither Belgium nor the Netherlands currently have active governments? Belgium has gone though about three Prime Ministers in just the last two years. Can you imagine this situation in smaller, newer nation states? You probably can – governmental instability is not an unusual occurrence, particularly in post-colonial/post-Soviet states… but it is usually accompanied with headlines of “regime collapse” or “governmental coups”.
