Well, the World Cup in South Africa has come and gone successfully, and it certainly left the world impressed with the capabilities of South Africa as a host.

So on the 22nd of June, 2010, South Africa got knocked out of the FIFA World Cup by not scoring enough goals against France, thus making history as the first host nation’s football team not to qualify past the group stages.
I don’t really see a cause for embarrassment here.
When South Africa’s bid for the World Cup succeeded, it was on the strength of the country’s ability to meet the needs of the tournament, with reference to socioeconomic concerns.
The King is Dead, Long Live The King
The world cup took a couple of rest days this week, and the vuvuzelas fell silent. The Jabulani ball trickled (but they’ll say it swirled violently under the influence of a Swiss dictator) to a pause, and match referees took the time to plan their next assault on the institution of the beautiful game. But silences are best enjoyed with whine and whine needs sour grapes.

Since Friday 11 June, the nation has been close to a permanent state of euphoria, excluding of course the one National Day of Mourning after Bafana Bafana got an ass-kicking, Uruguayan style. Even when our last hopes of going into the Round of 16 were dashed when we didn’t beat France with the required goal difference, we went out smiling, proud that we, ranked 83rd in the world, beat the former world champions, who are ranked ninth.
